Skandagiri
A 5:30 AM forest climb to catch a stunning cloud bed, followed by a historical detour to Lepakshi.
The Story
Place and History
Skandagiri, historically known as Kalavara Durga, is a mountain fortress located about 70 km from Bengaluru. Standing at an elevation of around 1,450 meters, it holds the ruins of an 18th-century fort once expanded by Tipu Sultan. Beyond its history, it is famously sought after for the magical "cloud bed" view during the winter and early spring months.
Moonlight above the foggy ridge
A perfect addition to a Skandagiri morning is a short drive further north to the historic town of Lepakshi. Here lies the 16th-century Veerabhadra Temple, known for its intricate Vijayanagara architecture, a legendary hanging pillar, and India's largest monolithic Nandi. Just nearby is the giant Jatayu Earth's Center or Jatayu statue, drawing on the Ramayana mythology of the bird that fell fighting Ravana.

Essential Skandagiri Trek Information
- Permits Required: You must pre-book entry tickets online via the Karnataka Forest Department's website.
Official Aranya Vihaara Booking Portal - Strict Anti-Plastic Rule: The forest officials take preserving the area seriously. Your bags will be checked specifically for plastic packaging before starting the trek.
- Timings: Officials open the gates exactly at 5:30 AM. Old online blogs suggesting earlier times (like 4:30 AM) are completely outdated.
- Parking Facility: Parking is available near the Skandagiri base entry/checkpoint for private vehicles.
- Trek Details: It's an 8 to 9 km round-trip that generally takes moderately paced trekkers 4 hours. The terrain shifts from dirt paths to completely rocky, making it a moderate difficulty ascent.
- Best Season: Aim for November to March for optimal conditions to witness the sunrise above a sea of pillowy clouds.
Packing Checklist
- Must Carry: Permit confirmation, valid ID, water, trail shoes, light jacket, and a headlamp.
- Optional but Useful: Electrolytes, basic snacks, and a power bank.
- Do Not Carry: Single-use plastic packaging that will fail bag checks at the gate.
Racing the Fog
Our entire plan was based on an old internet thread that confidently suggested starting our trek around 4:30 AM. Eager to catch the legendary sunrise, the group congregated at our rendezvous point, Kogilu Cross, at 3:30 in the morning. As expected with group dynamics, we faced some delays, managing to finally reach the base of Skandagiri around 5:30 AM.
Fortunately, that timing was perfect. We quickly learned from officials that the gates actually don't open until 5:30 AM anyway. At the entrance, authorities were busy tearing through bags for their strict anti-plastic sweep. Because I had brought along a bunch of snacks sealed in plastic, our group suddenly ended up having a pre-trek morning feast right there at the gates! We stuffed ourselves, threw the wrappers into the dustbins to comply with checking, and got ready to hit the trail.
Headlamp through dense fog
At exactly 5:30, we started our hike. The initial stretches of the path were smooth and relatively easy, but it quickly gave way to rugged, rocky terrain. As the incline stiffened, our large group organically ungrouped according to everyone's varying stamina. Rakshith, Harshith, Pavan, Vishnu, and I somehow found ourselves at the vanguard, pushing a relentless and dizzyingly fast ascent. We were completely exhausted and out of breath, but refused to slow down. Keeping a frantic pace, we five managed to hammer our way to the peak in roughly an hour. Trust me, climbing that fast early in the morning is no joke.

A Cloud Bed to Remember
We reached the summit exhausted but pumped—and found it absolutely pitch black and engulfed in dense fog. We were the clear early arrivals, and instead of a grand sunrise, we couldn't even see a few meters ahead of us. We sank down shivering in the sharp wind to let our racing heart rates recover while waiting for the others.
Summit still wrapped in fog
As the rest of the group slowly trickled up toward the top, the morning began to shift. The harsh fog that had robbed us of the initial sunrise finally settled nicely into the valley directly below. It transformed into the fabled, breath-taking "cloud bed." Nandi Hills peeked out beautifully in the distance. The fierce wind made it cold, but the panoramic views made it worth every burning lung-full on the climb up. Once everyone was fully recovered, we spent a long time walking around the fort ruins and capturing endless photos against the floating white clouds.

Skandagiri group summit moment
The descent ended up being unexpectedly fun. I just let gravity do its thing, kept my legs loose, and let them free-flow through the downhill stretches. That helped me descend really fast, and once we hit the base, I finished a coconut water in one go before we rolled out to Lepakshi.

A Detour Through Time
Still high on energy after the descent, we collectively decided not to go straight home. Instead, we pushed the plan forward and drove to the ancient town of Lepakshi.
Wandering through the gorgeous 16th-century corridors of the Veerabhadra Temple was incredible, with its intricately carved pillars making a stark contrast to our dirty trekking shoes. We followed that up with a quick trip to see the awe-inspiring Jatayu statue gazing out over the landscape. After completely draining our leftover adrenaline, we packed back into our cars and headed home—tired, hungry, but with a solid memory banked for life.
